How it works
The method behind the numbers.
Work out what the session costs you to deliver, then add the profit you want on top. The hours cover everything you spend on the job: shooting, editing, and travel and admin time (emails, travel, uploads, delivery), all at your desired hourly rate.
cost to deliver = hours × rate + gear + km × rate per km + prints + software
price = cost to deliver ÷ (1 − margin)
tax = price × tax rate
total = price + tax- Margin here is the share of the price that is profit, not a markup on cost. A 10% margin on a $900 price is $90 of profit.
- Reverse check: type the quote you have in mind, before tax, and the tool shows what it pays per hour once the session costs come out, with profit counted as pay:
(quote − session costs) ÷ total hours. - Every starting value is an example. The 13% tax is Ontario HST; enter your own rate, or 0 if you do not charge tax.
- Gear wear is your own estimate of what a shoot uses up (a share of camera, lens and light replacement cost). The currency choice changes formatting only; nothing is converted.
